Every now and then, the world will bless us with a soulful body of work that cannot be ignored. June 23rd saw the latest offering from New Zealand songwriter, Teeks.
This EP takes hold of you from the second you press play. The intro begins with a choir of soulful voices in perfect harmony setting the scene for the smooth captivating voice of Te Karehana Gardiner-Toi as he bellows the words "When I look into your eyes/ All I see is paradise". This is followed up by a bluesy track that simply puts you in a trance. "Wash over Me" is a beautifully written song about redemption by water. smooth bass, crisp keys, simplistic drums and a splash of lead guitar compliment Teeks' vocal performance so well.
"If Only", the mid point of the EP is a personal favourite. A love song that's reminiscent of the late Amy Winehouse. The video puts you right into the era that surely inspired this hit song, a 1950's vibe. "If only I could click my fingers". "Changes" is a big tune. This is one where Teeks and his team decide to bring in elements of a beautiful brass band but all in moderation. I swear, this mans vocals are like butter. Showing his range in this track, he almost forces you to close your eyes and get lost in all the glory that is happening inside your ears.
"Never Be Apart" reminds me of summer time on a beach in New Zealand, sitting by a fire as someone strums a guitar and serenades the congregation. Another classic and well written song.
"In the morning sun/ In the place we were young/ In the wind on my skin/ I will find you and we'll never be apart"
Teeks takes us out the same way that he brought us in. Harmonies and smooth vocals that almost make you sad that the EP is finished. That "I want more" feeling. In conclusion, this project is amazing. True artistry from start to finish and the perfect companion for your sunday afternoon, for any afternoon. You know what? Just listen. There is no way you will be disappointed.
