Over the past few years or so, the southern hemisphere has produced some of the best music in the world. I mean think about it. There has been the amazing career of world wide superstar, Lorde (NZ), who actually also recently released a really good album! The Rise of Hip Hop King in his own right, David Dallas (NZ), who has collaborated with the likes of Freddie Gibbs. Hiatus Kaiyote (AUS), the Melbourne Grammy nominated Neo-Soul group who were sampled by Drake on the opening track of More Life. Then there is William Singe (AUS), Sydney's internet sensation turned world touring R&B powerhouse and casual household name, who is now signed to RCA Records which is home to the likes of Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Kings of Leon. This is just a small list that doesn't even begin to cover the magnitude of talent that is currently emerging from this side of the world.
So in comes the newest player in the big leagues, New Zealand's latest vocal goddess, Theia. Now when I brought this one to the boss, he looked at me and asked "Isn't Theia someone in Greek mythology?" I chuckled and replied with "she could be. But just listen." About an hour later I was told I could write this story. So who is this undeniably talented music heavyweight in the making? We did our research and turns our she is a Christchurch born singer who stepped onto the scene about a year ago with her breakout single titled 'Roam'. A dreamy pop/R&B crossover track that has amassed over 8 million spotify streams.
Naturally this would lead to her being bestowed the title of "kiwi music's next big thing" and she let the industry know that she was here to stay by following up with her heartfelt "Champagne Supanova" and feel good song, "Treat You". She has owned radio charts in her motherland and graced the prestigious MUSEXPO in Los Angeles earlier this year. Today she released her debut self titled EP and it is more than worthy of the praise I have spent the better part of the last three hundred words writing. To be quite frank, Theia is nothing short of pure talent and she is about to blow up. The Warner Music NZ A&R team did a good job finding this one and we can't wait to catch her live next time she blesses Melbourne City with an appearance. I'm a fan and I've converted the entire team into fans!
